Becoming a bounty hunter

By Steven Jones

Bounty hunters are a pretty rare breed, or at least, the good ones are. There’s not nearly as much glamour in bounty hunting as you may think, so if you’re in this for the cool equipment and to travel around a bit, then this is definitely not the job for you. However, bounty hunting is very well paid and if you’re one of the best, you can be extremely well off financially. There are many different skills and disciplines needed to become a bounty hunter, the most important of which is a strong understanding of the bail laws in your area. Without a good understanding of the legality behind your business, you’re not going to go very far.

It isn’t just a case of starting to catch criminals right away, you have to be able to advertise your services properly and build a reputation built on efficiency. If you’re constantly losing criminals and costing bail agents large amounts of money, you’re not going to get any repeat business, it’s as simple as that.

Professional bounty hunters often prefer to be called “Fugitive recovery agents” or “Bail recovery agents”. The job is still ultimately the same, catching people who have posted bail and making sure they appear in court. They are hired by bail agents who will pay a small percentage (normally around 10%) for the bounty hunter to ensure that the defendant appears in court when summoned.
In reality, the job isn’t nearly as violent or dangerous as most people think. The fact is that anyone who has committed a violent crime will not be allowed to post bail, so it is highly unlikely you’re going to meet someone who poses a genuine risk to yourself. They may resist arrest by running away, but in general once you find them they will be fairly compliant.

Bounty hunters can be quite heavy handed, bordering on arrogant. Most of the long-term bounty hunters will often have a great deal of disdain for the people they are trying to catch; however the best ones are those who are dedicated to ensuring they find and arrest the criminal. They can do this using a number of different methods; surveillance is absolutely vital and bounty hunters have to be at least reasonably intelligent if they’re going to be successful. Sophisticated equipment is not necessarily a must, but is often used by the most successful.

If you get a good start with bounty hunting, you can afford to spend more money and time on being the best you can. That is primarily why the long-standing bounty hunters are more successful, because they have more resources at their disposal. This is why the large bail bond agents will normally only choose bounty hunters who have a good reputation and who they have used before. There are plenty of companies looking to hire bounty hunters in all areas, for example you can find a Florida Bondsman or an Orlando Bondsman within a matter of seconds. If you wanted to know more about Orlando bail bonds, you can just look on the internet and find all the information you want; this is vital education that a bounty hunter needs before operating in a particular area.
